Equality and Diversity Policy

We recognise that discrimination is unacceptable.   Equality of opportunity has been a long-standing feature of our employment practices and procedures and any breaches of the policy will lead to disciplinary proceedings and, if appropriate, disciplinary action.

The aim of this policy is to ensure no job applicant, employee, learner or visitor is discriminated against either directly or indirectly provide because of:

  • Age
  • Disability (whether visible, eg a wheelchair user or hidden eg mental health issues or a serious heart condition)
  • Ethnicity (including people of black and minority ethnic heritage; Gypsy, Roma Traveller communities; and new migrant communities within the county)
  • Faith, religion or belief
  • Socio-economic status – people who suffer disadvantage because of their social and economic circumstances
  • Gender – both men and women, and with particular reference to the inequality that pregnant women and women with children face.
  • Sexual orientation – including Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people
  • Personal status within a trans community (Transgender; Transsexual; Transvestite; and people having  gone through or going through Gender reassignment)
  • Marital status
  • Carer role

Our equality and diversity objectives are:

  • To actively promote the entitlement of all learners to equal rights and opportunities within Team Enterprises
  • To seek to identify and eliminate all forms of discrimination, whether overt, covert or by omission
  • To embrace and promote diversity
  • To encourage, support and help all learners to reach their potential
  • To provide learning opportunities that meet the diverse learning needs of St Helens communities
  • To promote participation in learning from all sections of those communities, including all those who may experience disadvantage and inequality
  • To make our information and services accessible to all the people we serve
  • To build trust and confidence in our learners and the communities we serve
  • To work in partnership to maximise the benefits of learning and improve the quality of life of individuals and within communities
  • To identify and address achievement gaps between particular groups
  • To seek feedback from communities and individuals on all aspects of our provision
  • To take action to address issues and concerns raised through feedback

To achieve these objectives, Team Enterprises will:

  • Provide a safe and accessible environment for learning
  • Provide information in accessible formats and a range of languages
  • Establish clear guidance for learners on behaviour and good practice
  • Challenge all instances of discrimination and implement procedures to redress grievances arising from discrimination
  • Publicise procedures relating to harassment, bullying and safeguarding
  • Plan a learning programme targeted at groups and areas that experience disadvantage
  • Promote diversity within teaching and learning
  • Treat each learner as an individual
  • Identify and support additional learning needs
  • Provide training and support for staff in all aspects of equality legislation and good practice
  • Collect and collate data on protected characteristics and monitor participation and achievement trends


The Senior Management Team is responsible for:

– Implementing this policy and monitoring its impact

– Providing opportunities for learners to comment on their experience with Team Enterprises

All managers are responsible for:

–  Raising staff awareness of their individual responsibility for the implementation of the   policy objectives within their area of work

– Challenging all instances of discrimination reported to them and providing information    about redress of grievances

– Ensuring the good practice of organisations with whom we work in partnership

– Planning a programme which maximises participation from all sectors of the community

– Monitoring participation in learning by a range of groups

– Providing opportunities for learners to comment on their experience with Team Enterprises

Tutors / assessors are responsible for:

– Challenging all instances of discrimination reported to them and providing information about redress of grievances

– Monitoring the active participation and achievement of all members of their group in the learning process

– Identifying learners with additional needs and making referrals for support

– Promoting diversity through the curriculum

– Reflecting diversity through subject choice and learning resources

– Providing opportunities for learners to comment on their experience with Team Enterprises

Learners are responsible for:

– Treating staff and fellow learners with equal respect regardless of race, faith, gender, age, disability, socio-economic status or sexual orientation

– Recognising, challenging or reporting any discriminatory behaviour by others

We will ensure that the policy is circulated to any agencies responsible for our recruitment and a copy of the policy will be made available for all employees and made known to all applicants for employment.

The policy will be communicated to all private contractors reminding them of their responsibilities towards the equality of opportunity.

The policy will be implemented in accordance with the appropriate statutory requirements and full account taken of all available guidance and in particular any relevant Codes of Practice.

We will maintain a neutral working environment in which no employee or worker feels under threat or intimidated.
